- Short Summary:
Advanced Physical Climate focusses on regional modes of climate variability, their diagnostics, impacts and predictability, on climate feedback mechanisms and the IPCC process.
Course Content:
Advanced aspects of the Physical Climate System will be addressed by lectures and practical application. The following topics will be covered:
North Atlantic Oscillation, Great Salinity Anomaly, Tropical Atlantic Variability, Monsoon Dynamics (MJO), Regional Impacts of Climate Change, Ice-Albedo Feedback, Cloud/Water Vapor - Radiation Feedback, Wind – SST (Bjerkness) Feedback, MOC – Sea-Ice Feedback, Vegetation – Radiation Feedback, Ocean ventilation – CO2, Biogeochemical Cycles
In addition the IPCC process and content of the report will be studied.
Learning Outcomes:
Students will become familiar with the basic regional modes of physical climate variability with a focus on the ocean and atmosphere and their interaction with an emphasis on interannual to centennial time scales. They will learn about climatic impacts on human activity and obtain a basic understanding of the IPCC process. Moreover, they will understand the underlying positive and negative feedbacks of the
climate system and how they can be simulated in models. They will be able to make use of mathematical methods needed to solve physical problems in climate dynamics with a particular focus on advanced
statistical data analysis and simple models.
