- The archaeological sciences have helped reveal exciting new insights into our shared human pre(history), uncovering at unprecedented resolutions new information on ancient dietary dynamics, mobility, trade and exchange, site formation, and population histories. This lecture course is designed to provide students with a solid foundation in a variety of archaeological scientific techniques as well as the scientific principles of these methods. We will explore core elements of the archaeological sciences, including zooarchaeology, macro- and micro-botany, geoarchaeology and absolute dating, as well as biomolecular approaches including stable isotope analysis, ancient DNA, proteomics, and organic residue analyses. This course is designed to provide you with foundational knowledge in the archaeological sciences. You do not need a background in chemistry or biology to take this course.
