Inhalt

This lecture aims at understanding the changing geography of the global economy, both from a global perspective and from a regional development perspective. In the first part of the lecture the changing global economic map, as well as theoretical and analytical tools will be described and analyzed. It will also provide an overview of the driving forces behind globalisation, namely states, transnational corporations and innovations within logistics and information technologies. The second part of the lecture will focus on specific industrial case studies, such as the car industry, the shipbuilding industry, the textile and clothing industry, as well as the service industry. The aim is to show the strongly differing spatial patterns between industries, which are caused by the varying role of transnational corporations and institutional framework in each industry. In this part there will also be a strong focus on the position of regional economies in the constantly changing global production networks in different industries.
