Inhalt
Very often, the terms colonialism and imperialism are used as highly emotionally charged concepts to label every “bad” policy in international relations. One of the aims of this seminar is to show that colonialism, as well as imperialism, are much more than just simple synonyms for something bad. In this course, we will engage with the theories of colonialism by reading key works from Edward Said, Gayatri Chakravorty Spivak, and Latin American decolonial thinkers. We will clarify what exactly is meant by colonialism, colony, and colonisation, and we will explore the relationship between empires and their subjects through comparative case studies. Our journey will take us through overseas empires (Dutch, Portuguese, Spanish, British), inland empires (Russian, Ottoman), and Asian formations (Qing, Mughals, Safavids). We will wrap up the seminar with a discussion on the fall of empires and the rise of nationalism.
