Unsere Forschungsgruppe widmet sich der gemeinsamen programmatischen Erforschung von Toleranz und den vielfältigen Herausforderungen, die mit dem Konzept und der Praxis von Toleranz verbunden sind. Wir werden nicht nur die Schwierigkeit, sondern auch die Möglichkeit von Toleranz neu beleuchten. Das Ablehnung-Respekt-Modell der Toleranz wird unsere Forschungen leiten. Das Modell baut auf wichtigen Einsichten mehrerer Disziplinen auf, insbesondere der politischen, der Sozial- und der Moralphilosophie sowie der Sozialpsychologie. Wir sind überzeugt, dass dieses Modell als Leitmodell sehr gut geeignet ist, doch wird auch das Modell selbst in unseren Forschungen auf den Prüfstand gestellt. Es ist offen für eine Weiterentwicklung (Spezifizierung, Präzisierung, Verbesserung), aber auch die Überarbeitung, Zurückweisung oder gar der Austausch durch eine Alternative sind letztlich möglich, sollte das Modell der Prüfung nicht standhalten. Unser Hauptziel Das Hauptziel der Forschungsgruppe besteht darin, ein theoretisch kohärentes und empirisch robustes Rahmenwerk zum Verständnis der Grundlagen, Dynamiken und (intendierten sowie nicht-intendierten) Folgen von Toleranz in pluralen Gesellschaften zu erarbeiten. Unsere gemeinsame Anstrengung wird den Stand der Forschung voranbringen, indem wir ein wirkmächtiges konzeptuelles Instrument zum Verständnis von Toleranz hervorbringen, welches auf sich gegenseitige stützenden Erkenntnissen unterschiedlicher Disziplinen basiert. Wir sind zuversichtlich, dass wir damit den Weg ebnen werden nicht nur für eine wissenschaftliche, sondern auch für eine öffentliche Bewertung von Toleranz in westlichen Gesellschaften und darüber hinaus, die sowohl realistisch ist (d.h. von Toleranz weder zu viel noch zu wenig erwartet) als auch unbeeinflusst von Politisierung und Ideologie.

Our Research unit will engage in a collaborative and programmatic investigation into tolerance and the multifaceted challenges associated with the concept and practice of tolerance in order to shed new light not only on difficulty, but also on the possibility of tolerance. Our investigation will be guided by the disapproval-respect model of tolerance, which has its roots in the important insights from multipledisciplines, especially political,social, and moral philosophy as well as social psychology. While we are confident that the model is well suited to serve this guiding function, the model itself will be put to the test during the investigation. It is open to further development (specification, articulation and amendment), but also revision, or even rejection and replacement if it does not stand the test. Our main goal The main objective of the Research Unit is to build a theoretically coherent and empirically robust framework for understanding the foundations, dynamics, and (intended as well as unintended) outcomes of tolerance in plural societies. Our concerted effort will move the state of the art forward with a powerful conceptual device for understanding tolerance based on consolidated, mutually supportive insights from different disciplines. We are confident that it will pave the way not only to a scientific but also a public appreciation, in Western societies and beyond, of tolerance that is both realistic (i.e., expects of tolerance neither too much nor too little) and uncontaminated by ideology and politicization.
